Coastal Karnataka comprising three Districts, viz. Dakshina Kannada, Udupi and Uttara Kannada, where Catholic faith took its deep roots in later part of the 17th Century AD. Legend has it that, Apostle Thomas and Bartholomew visited the place during early Christian era.
Mangalore – a city, full of life, is an educational hub with its rich culture and heritage, popularly known as Rome of the East. Mangalore diocese with 125 years of tradition covers the geographical area of Dakshina Kannada and Udupi districts in Karnataka and a part of Kasargod district in Kerala in Western coast of Indian peninsula with around 160 parishes under its jurisdiction. By and large, over the world people from these places are better known as Mangaloreans. Konkani being the common language among the Mangalorean Catholics, a binding spirit of unity, with which they have attained a unique identity of Konkani Roman Catholics.
By nature people are enterprising and known for co-existence and co-operation, accepting the best in their neighbor and surroundings. In search of better prospects, today they are spread over every nook and corner of this globe, and so as in Middle East countries and made a mark of their presence wherever they go. And Oman is not an exception.
In the Parish
Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Ghala, is one of the oldest and largest parishes in the Sultanate of Oman, which is completing its 25 years this year, where there are multinational communities involved. The Mangalorean community of the Parish is a vibrant community with a strength of approximately a thousand catholic, has been a great source of support to the Parish. This community is actively involved in all church activities. They play major role in Liturgical Ministry, Altar Servers Ministry, Choir Ministry, Eucharistic Ministry, Lector Ministry, Ushers Ministry and other social ministries of the parish. They are also actively involved in teaching Catechism to our children. The Konkani Prayer Group “Jezu Maka Apoita” is another move by the community which has been predominantly making headways with a view to take care of the spiritual needs of the community by regular prayer meetings and related devotion.
‘Monthi Fest’ (Feast of the Nativity of Blessed Virgin Mary) is one of the major festivals, celebrated on 8th September by the Mangalorean community in the Parish with pomp & glory. It combines the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary and blessing of "Novem" (new crop/harvest) to link the aspirations of agrarian families back home. This celebration every year in the Parish, is flagship event of the community gathering thousands with a traditional meal served with blessed ‘novem’ (new crop).
